"Daddy, why the rainbow flag?":

For social cohesion, gender diverse groups may pick a symbol not attracting minors

Editorial Assembly / Updated: 2024-08-01

Preface: Harvey Milk influenced the design of Rainbow flag as a symbol for the gay rights movement in 1978. In recent years allegations had surfaced that Harvey Milk, assassinated with then San Francisco mayor in that same year, was a pedophile. For more info read here

My neighbour has a large rainbow flag hanging on his balcony.

Sometimes I have my 5 years old son walking with me by his house, and sometimes my son would ask me, "Daddy, why is there a rainbow flag?"

My son certainly doesn't understand all those gender minority groups' way of sex. In fact he haven't even reached the age of asking where he came from.

I am always distressed when my son ask about that rainbow flag, so much so that I will now try to avoid that neighbour's house when I walk with my son.

I am a science nerd, I always explain things to my son as accurately as possible. When my son asked why the sky is blue, I have to go to the details about how the white sun light is composed by all different colours, and how the air and dust would scatter the blue light better than other colours... My son would listen carefully, and he will understand very well, so well that when on a different occasion, when I told him that the air on Venus is different than earth, he would immediately ask what is the colour of the sky on Venus?

Now standing in front of my neighbour's house, I am telling my son about the rainbow flag, "when you grow up you will understand what that flag means."

My son is sad, he is sad because of the desire for knowledge cannot be satisfied.

I am also sad, because I just cannot shield him from the curiosities he is not supposed to have at his age.

Local community expressed their sentiment against the rainbow flag.

Rainbow is certainly the colour of the kids, I took my son to kids play ground, early care, after school clubs etc, you can always see rainbows decor everywhere, kids are familiar with that, and when they see rainbows they know that is where they should play or stay.

This is why I am extremely frustrated, when earlier this year, I took my son to the Sydney Power House Museum, and they have a sector that dedicated for the the LGBTQ themes, and you guess it, almost same kind of rainbow decor, all over the place. My son was excited to see those things, and he wanted to drag me into that place. I told him it is time to go home, and ended his day early. After this incident I felt depressed for more than a week.

Now I am afraid of rainbow flags. I don't want to admit I am homophobic. I am an inclusive person, I eat food from all culture background, and watch movies produced from all over the world... But I am afraid of that flag.

I heard all those crazy theories that they picked rainbow as their symbol because they wanted to attract minors, I've heard them all. But at least now, I am still trying to persuade myself, that is a mere coincident.

I think the rainbow flag is a mistake, the respectful gender minority groups could have picked a symbol that would be less attractive to our young. I believe this could avoid a great deal of misunderstandings. Please, for the sake of social cohesion.

Next time I walk my son by my neighbour's house, I hope the flag would no longer be there anymore. I believe this is something all my other neighbours had been hoping for, especially if they have kids.
