Australian government said they want to ban children under the age 16 from using social media.

There is no doubt that children need protection, except what we recently hear is that teenagers, around that age, luring pedophiles online using social media and then "teach them a lesson". The corrupt government, however, keeps telling people that they were homophobic attacks: they are too scared to tell people the truth.

I am not sure if this is the ultimate reason why government want to ban children on the social media, but if they got their way, it may force social media platforms to use ID to identify each user.

Some may think, government can always use IP to find me anyway, why should I worry about giving my ID to social media companies?

Mate, it matters, matters a lot.

First of all, it is not easy for government to find you, you have to do something very very wrong online. The Australian police are very corrupt and incompetent. Even if they find you, they have to send dozens of people to raid your house and drag you through the equally corrupt and incompetent court system. They have to prepare all the paper works, and struggle with their lawyers and prosecutors to explain all the technical terms. And especially, if it had become a "free speech" case, lots of people will be watching, and those corrupt cops will be under enormous pressure. So really, they would not bother doing it most of the time considering the meagre salary they are earning.

The corrupt government had always wanted to outsource this thing to some "private body" secretly to deal with "troublemakers". They really hope that criminal gangs can get hold of the personal details of those activists and "pacify" them in a very "cost-effective" manner. And most importantly, the people wouldn't know, it was the government who did it.

Therefore, the first step would be letting the social media platforms to possess as much info as possible, real names, addresses etc, everything needed for criminal gangs to identify and locate the activist.

It is important to note that a social media company is a complicated place, with employees and volunteers from all kinds of background, it had already been infiltrated by special interest groups of all kinds. Originally, they work there to delete posts or just ban people. Then, they will have the IDs that they can leak to a third party to continue some work in real life, if merely deleting posts cannot satisfy their masters.

Even if they keep the matter to themselves, it will make activists a lot harder too. Every one of us had our social media accounts banned for all kind of weird reasons before, most of the time we just change our email address and register a new account and continue what we were doing, this works for most of us. But if the social media identify us by government IDs, once they banned us, we will never be able to get back to that platform again. This will inevitably reduce the number of people exposing government atrocities online.

Therefore, the intention of government pushing out u16 ban on social media, is just because they want other parties to get hold of our personal information, so we the people are weakened. It would be an understatement to say it is a "Trojan Horse" against free speech.
